Sonara Camp Hatta — Mountain Dining and Overnight Pods, Dubai | Arabia by Oloi Shorua

Sonara Camp

Hatta, Hajar Mountains, Dubai — Sonara Camp

Sonara Camp sits in a mountain valley above Hatta, one hundred kilometres from central Dubai. It operates primarily as a luxury outdoor dining and entertainment experience rather than a conventional hotel. The Hajar Mountains rise on all sides. There are no roads visible, no city sounds and no artificial light on the surrounding terrain. Consequently, the contrast with Dubai’s urban environment — reachable in just over an hour by road — is immediate and complete.

The camp opens seasonally between October and May. Dinner takes place on a raised platform facing the mountain landscape, with atmospheric fire features, live music and a menu that draws on regional flavours. For guests who want to extend the experience overnight, The Nest pods provide transparent bubble-style accommodation embedded in the mountain setting. Furthermore, the Hatta area itself offers one of the strongest outdoor activity environments accessible from Dubai — the dam, the mountain bike trails and the hiking routes are all within easy reach of the camp.

The Setting

Hatta is the mountainous enclave of Dubai — a territory of the emirate that sits geographically within Oman, surrounded on most sides by Omani terrain. The Hajar Mountains here are drier and more rugged than the Musandam fjords to the north. Rock faces of granite and limestone rise above narrow wadis and small oasis settlements that have existed in these valleys for centuries. Sonara Camp occupies a valley position within this landscape where the sky is unobstructed in every direction. Additionally, the elevation keeps temperatures several degrees cooler than the Dubai coast throughout the season. As a result, evenings at Sonara Camp between November and February are genuinely cold by Gulf standards — a quality that makes the fire setting and the outdoor atmosphere work in a way that is simply not possible at a coastal venue.

The Nest — Overnight Accommodation

The Nest pods offer overnight stays within the camp for guests who want to extend the dinner experience into the morning. Each pod uses a transparent structure that frames the mountain landscape from the bed. The night sky is visible without leaving the interior. All pods include private bathrooms, climate control and bedding suited to the mountain temperatures. Moreover, waking to the Hajar Mountains at dawn — before the day-trip visitors arrive from Dubai — gives access to Hatta in a state of quiet that the afternoon crowds remove entirely. Breakfast follows in the camp before guests depart to the hiking trails, the dam or the road back toward the city.

Dining and Entertainment

The dinner experience is the core of Sonara Camp. Guests arrive by 4×4 transfer from a designated meeting point before sunset. The journey through the mountain terrain is part of the experience. On arrival, the camp is already lit — fire torches, lanterns and ambient lighting that uses the surrounding rock faces as its backdrop. The menu draws on Emirati and wider Arabian culinary traditions with a contemporary presentation. Furthermore, live music and entertainment run throughout the evening. The format is theatrical without being loud — the mountain setting provides a natural acoustic and visual frame that keeps the atmosphere contained and intimate rather than event-style.

Hatta and the Surrounding Area

Hatta offers more than the camp itself. The Hatta Dam reservoir sits within walking distance and provides kayaking, pedalo and paddleboard access on calm mountain water. Mountain biking trails of varying difficulty run through the Hajar terrain — one of the strongest trail networks in the UAE. Hiking routes connect the old Hatta Heritage Village to the surrounding escarpments. Additionally, the heritage village itself — a restored mud-brick settlement at the base of the mountains — provides historical context for a landscape that most visitors experience only as a scenic backdrop. Therefore, combining a Sonara Camp overnight with a full day of Hatta activities produces a short but genuinely substantial mountain experience within reach of Dubai.

When to Visit

Sonara Camp operates between October and May. December through February provides the strongest conditions — cold mountain evenings, clear skies and the most dramatic fire atmosphere. March and April bring warming temperatures but remain comfortable for outdoor dining. The camp does not operate in summer. However, Hatta itself is accessible year-round for daytime activities, and the heritage village and dam remain open throughout. Furthermore, Sonara Camp books out quickly during the UAE National Day period in December and across the school holiday weeks. Advance booking of four to six weeks during peak season is advisable.

Combining Sonara Camp with Other UAE Destinations

Sonara Camp works as a one to two night addition to a wider UAE itinerary. It pairs naturally with Dubai city as a mountain contrast accessible without a flight. Additionally, combining Sonara Camp with Al Maha Desert Resort gives a strong two-property UAE nature circuit — mountain valley in Hatta and conservation desert reserve near Dubai — both within 100 kilometres of the city. For visitors whose Arabian Peninsula journey begins or ends in Dubai, Sonara Camp provides a compelling final evening that places the desert and mountain character of the region in direct proximity to one of the world’s most urban environments.
